CHEMICAL COMPOSITION
Propolis consists of more than 180 chemical components.
The composition will vary from hive to hive depending on the origin of the resins collected.
Normally it is dark brown in colour, but it can be found in green, red, black and white hues, depending on the source.
Propolis is non-toxic.
‘Typical’ propolis has approximately 50 constituents:-
Resins/ vegetable balsams (50%)
Waxes (30%)
Essential oils (10%)
Pollen (5%)
Flavonoids, vitamins, organic acids and minerals (5%)
HIVE USES
Think of propolis as bees own medicine.
Bees use propolis:
As a natural cement to strengthen and seal cracks in the hive
To reduce vibration
To immunize themselves from bacterial infection and
To coat intruders to sterilize them and prevent infection from spreading through the hive.
MEDICINAL USES
Propolis raises the body’s natural resistance by stimulating the formation of antibodies and one’s own immune system
It also adds certain vitamins like B1, B, C, E and essential minerals including iron, aluminium, manganese and silicon to the body
Propolis stimulates enzyme systems, cell metabolism, circulation, collagen formation and improves the healing of burn wounds.

A Natural antibiotic
Virucide (effective against flu and herpes viruses)
Fungicide ( impedes the growth of various microscopic fungi that affect the skin and mucosa)
Emollient and antitussive (protects and reduces inflammation of the respiratory system)

Preservative for food – as propolis is non-toxic and antibacterial it is excellent for food preservation.
Cautions and possible side effects: Propolis rarely causes allergic reaction, however some people, especially those who have known allergic reactions to bee stings or other hive products (such as bee pollen ) should avoid propolis. Test on skin before use. If skin irritation or swelling of the mouth or throat occurs, discontinue use. If symptoms persist consult your health care practitioner

How Do I use Propolis?
Mouth Ulcers, minor throat and mouth infections:
Gargle 5-10 drops mixed in water and apply 2-3 drops onto toothpaste. Apply liquid directly to ulcers.
Colds and Flu:
Drink 5-10 drops in water per day
Minor Cuts and Abrasions:
Apply to affected area ever 4 hours
General Wellbeing:
Drink 5-10 drops in a glass of water each day
